A general overview of CBDB

CBDB项目由哈佛大学费正清研究中心、台湾“中央研究院”历史语言研究所、北京大学中国古代史中心联合主持，截止2017年，该项目共收录约417,000人的传记资料，并免费开放给公众使用。该数据库有三大特点，即跨度大、维度多、粒度细。

As a collabrative project of Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University, Institute of History and Philology of Academia Sinica , and Center for Research on Ancient Chinese History at Peking University , CBDB has covered 417,000 individuals by 2017 and is freely open to the public.It is Large-Scale, Multi-Dimensional and Fine-Grained.

CBDB中记载人数的时代分布

Population Distribution among Dynasties in CBDB


CBDB数据包含了从秦前到中华人民共和国上下两千年的历史，目前所记载人数约有417,000人。
本图展示数据库中所记载人数的时代分布，并用颜色区分朝代。
值得一提的是，数据库中采用“指数年”来描述人与年份的对应关系，它指人在顶峰时期的年份，常用60岁时的年份替代。这一指标既满足了人与年份的对应关系，也暗合了人的能动性。

CBDB contained biographical information about approximately 417,000 individuals by April 2017,ranging from Qin Dynasty to People's Republic of China.
The graph shows population distribution among dynasties distinguished with color.
It is worth mentioning that "index year" is assigned to match people and years, indicating the peak of people's life, which is often defined as the age 60. "Index year" satisfies the correspondence between people and years, as well as confirms to motiity in people.

CBDB从多种维度记录人物信息，除人物的姓名、生卒年等基本信息外，还包括了相关地址、任官、亲属、社会关系、著述等信息。
本图展示数据库中主要的八张表，表之间通过人物id相关联。此外，还有一些存储更多的信息的表，如使用表”任官地“对”任官“进行详细说明。


Except for basic information of historical figures, multiple information such as addresses, postings,kinship, social relationships and writings are recorded in CBDB.
The eight major tables included in the graph are connected with person id.
Besides,there are more tables explaining former entity information such as table 'POST_ARRD' to 'POSTINGS'.

Migration of Figures in Tang Dynasty


CBDB记录了多个层次的地理信息，本图展示唐代名士迁徙数据。
色块从左到右分别表示出生地、出生地所属道（高级别行政单位）、死亡地所属道、死亡地。
"其它"表示在数据库中出现次数不大于2的地名集合。

The geographical data in CBDB are multi-hierarchical. The sankey graph clearly shows migration from birthplace to deathplace in Tang dynasty.
The four columns of bars repectively represent birthplace, birthplace's Dao region, deathplace's Dao region and deathplace.
“其它”represents a collection of places with no more than 2 occurrences in the database.




CBDB中各类关系的统计

Social Relationship Distributions Recorded in CBDB


CBDB除人物基本属性外，还记录了人与人之间的交往关系，共包括10种关系类、34种关系子类以及241种关系条目，本图为各类关系的数量和层级分布。

Besides basic biographical information, CBDB also records multiple sorts of relationships,with 241 types of relationships categorized into 10 classes and 34 subclasses.
The graph shows ownership and volume of relationships in major dynasties.
